Outlook stuck in disconnected mode after password change

Scenario

A user changes their Microsoft 365 password and Outlook remains stuck in disconnected mode even after a reboot. New mail does not send and the status bar alternates between trying to connect and disconnected.

Recommended Resolution Path

  1. Confirm the new password works in webmail first to separate identity issues from client issues.
  2. Remove stale credentials from Credential Manager and relaunch Outlook.
  3. Force a fresh sign-in by removing the Office identity cache under the user profile.
  4. If Modern Auth prompts do not appear, run an Office repair and verify TLS and time sync on the workstation.
