Printers renew DHCP but keep old DNS hostname

Minimal guidance for messy support realities.

Scenario

Network printers obtain fresh DHCP leases, but DNS still points users to an obsolete hostname or IP.

Recommended Resolution Path

  1. Review DHCP DNS update credentials and whether the printer is allowed to register dynamic records.
  2. Delete stale A and PTR records carefully so the current lease can repopulate.
  3. If the device cannot register correctly, create a static record aligned to reservation standards.
  4. Document the hostname standard so future replacements do not inherit messy names.

Technician Notes

Document what changed, what confirmed the fix, and whether the issue points to a broader standards gap worth addressing for the client.
